Land's End is one of
Britain's most famous landmarks, purely by nature of its geographical
location at the Western tip of the Cornish peninsula. Its location has
become the traditional starting point for journeys to John O'Groats,
874 Miles away at the North Eastern edge of the British mainland. These
journeys are undertaken on foot, by bicycle, motorcycle and other
means, in pursuit of personal self-discovery and to raise money for
charity.
Land's End signpost
You're
standing next to the famous Land's End signpost, which shows the
distance in Miles to John O'Groats, New York, The Isles of Scilly and
Longships lighthouse, which you can clearly see one and a half miles
off the Coast. For a small fee you can have your home town added to the
signpost and have your photo taken in front of it.
Land's End attractionsLand's End is a popular family attraction, providing indoor
entertainments like the Doctor Who Experience as well as a
decommissioned lifeboat that kids can expore, a playground and a range
of gift and sweet shops. It's a great location from which to send
holiday postcards - complete with Land's End Postmark.
Land's
End's development as a commercial tourism location has attracted
criticism for being at odds with and impairing the local environment.
If you've come to Cornwall for spectacular unspoilt scenery and remote
walks, you're unlikley to be impressed. If, despite this, you want to
add Land's End to your itinerary, you'll enjoy it more if you arrive
via the coast path from Sennen, a mile to the North.
