Originally, the castle roof was used as another gun platform. The turret would have been used as a look-out.
If you look down over the parapet you can see the forward gun platform and three of the four gun ports or 'embrasures'. The five cannon on the lawn terrace date from the reign of George III(1760-1820). The leftmost of the two buildings visible on the headland opposite is Pendennis Castle.
