The main offensive armament of the castle was located here, in the forward gun room and on the forward gun platform above it. The five alcoves, known as 'casemates' have smoke vents which you can see if you look just below the top of the arches nearest you.

Most of the guns in this room are ship's cannon from about 1800, but the long canon on the red carriage that you are standing right next to is a bronze saker cast by the famous Venetian gunmaster Alberghetti around 1560. Castle records show that St Mawes had three of these bronze sakers.
