Pendeen Lighthouse was built by Trinity House in 1900. For a mainland lighthouse, it feels very remote and isolated. The atmosphere here when the mist rolls in and the automatic foghorn starts up must be quite creepy, but in the late afternoon sunshine it makes a stunning addition to the West Penwith coastal landscape The building attached to the tower was formerly accommodation for the lighthouse keepers and their families. The lighthouse was automated in 1995 and is now controlled from the Trinity House operations centre in Harwich and the cottages are rented as holiday accommodation. We’ve got three lighthouses on lookaround Cornwall now, in addition to Pendeen, you can look around the Lizard Lighthouse and Godrevy. Let us know if there are any others you’d like to see.
